Facial Implant Facts
Facial Implant Surgery is an exact and technically demanding plastic surgery procedure that is best performed by plastic surgeons with a lot of experience with facial implants. The Hospital Group is the world's leader in facial implant surgery. Our surgeons have performed more facial implant surgery than any other cosmetic surgery provider in the world.
History of Facial Implants and the Hospital Group
Medical devices called facial implants are rapidly becoming extremely popular for lending an attractive shape to faces. These devices can be made from many materials different from the human body, but the material selected by the Hospital Group for exclusive use over the past 20 years has been silicone rubber. Silicone was thoroughly and exhaustively investigated worldwide during the latter 1980s into the mid 1990s to evaluate its safety for implantation in the human body. Safety of breast implants was seriously questioned. Therefore, the United States Government Food and Drug Administration demanded research in many excellent centers around the United States and also throughout the world. It was categorically proven that silicone does not produce disease or autoimmune responses that are negative within the human body. Although one can never say never in medical science, the chances that silicone could present a problem through some chemical interaction with the body has never been substantiated and has never been seen in the Hospital Group's extensive experiences. Furthermore, the near miracle results when the rubberized version of silicone called Silastic is placed into a human face has never been questioned by any governmental or medical agency or other legal authorities.
Changing the shape of a face to make it more attractive and indeed even beautiful can only be done permanently and effectively with anatomic facial implants. The current implant designs used worldwide were patented by Dr. Terino, a Hospital Group plastic surgeon, over 20 years ago. Implants made of other materials have copied his patent designs so that his are the major ones used by nearly every surgeon who believes in using them for wonderful facial improvements. Facial implants are not exclusively useful in only aging faces. They have much wider use for young people and as well as people of all ages because the foundation structure of the face is what sets the stage for attractiveness or beauty from the overlying soft tissues and features (eyes, nose, forehead, chin, eyebrows, skin, etcetera).
Moreover, in younger faces, i.e., where the tissues have not loosened and the skin has not started to become wrinkled and sagged, the underlying facial foundation is more visible and, therefore, the effectiveness of a facial implant is much more beneficial. This is not to say, however, that for those who are not blessed with adequate underlying facial architecture by the Almighty that implants do not also work their “modern day miracles” in aging faces as well because they do.
The favorite locations that are the most useful for volumizing a face to make it more attractive are the cheeks and the middle of the face from the mouth up to the eyebrows. The second location, equally as important, if not more so, which makes an enormous difference in a person’s appearance, is the shape of the chin and the jaw line.
There are other areas such as around the nose, underneath the eyes, and the temple and forehead region, which also lend themselves to improvements with implants as well. Consultation with the Hospital Group will give you a chance to discover which areas are the most favorable for you to improve.
One of the wonderful features of his silicone rubber implants is that they are designed to fit snugly onto the bone and become immobilized or trapped by mother nature’s healing over the top of them, which holds them in place so that they feel as natural as the patient’s own bone structure both to the patient and to any other examiner, friend, or family.
Another exciting feature is the fact that they do not dissolve or alter over time and as previously mentioned, they do not react with the body to cause an adverse disease process such as cancer.
And finally, probably the greatest advantage of Dr. Terino’s silicone rubber implants is the fact that because they have smooth surfaces, they can be removed or changed in shape or position if the patient and the doctor desire. Sometimes, but rarely, patients prefer to go back to their own inherited family appearance. Other times, the improvement is excellent and even spectacular, but the patient has a more specific idea in mind of how they would like to look after trying the first change.
This is not to say that one should go into these surgeries like trying on a suit, hat, or dress, or even a new hair style or different form of make up. There are certain rare instances when changes or reversibility can occur harmlessly, but still involve surgical procedures including expenses, time off work, and exercise activities during healing and it takes weeks to months for the final swelling to disappear to see the final result.
Also, secondary surgeries do carry a slightly greater risk of potential problems with infections or nerve damage, things which at the time of a first surgery can be expected to occur only rarely and in less than 1% in the Hospital Group experience.
