Implant Removal

What are the most common reasons for breast implant removal surgery?
1. implant leakage or rupture
2. capsular contracture
3. change in size or shape. These complications comprise over 70% of all implant removal surgery.
Can I tell if my implant is leaking?
With saline implants it usually is apparent when they leak due to the change in volume. As the saline is absorbed by the body tissues the breast becomes softer and deflated. With a silicone or gel implant, due to the constitution of the gel, this may not be noticed as quickly due to the retention of volume. This is the case because as the silicone gel leaks out of the implant in the capsule or pocket and is usually stuck inside the capsule pocket. However, many women can tell a subtle change in their shape while others notice nothing at all.
What is capsular contracture like?
Capsular contracture makes the breast implant feel hardened, and the breast becomes increasingly distorted. As the contractures proceeds, the implant feels firmer, and may take on a ball-like look. Capsular contracture also is associated with pain and discomfort.
